T-Shirt Features

T-shirts come with different necklines, sleeves, and lengths. Those things affect both how the t-shirt looks and how comfortable it is to wear. You should also think about the size and fit of the t-shirt: not just whether it is too big or too small, but also whether it fits tightly or loosely. Tight or loose fits are appropriate for people’s different body types, but they also affect how the casual company or how formal the t-shirt appears.

If you’re going to be carrying keys or a wallet around, consider a t-shirt with pockets, and if you’re expecting cold or damp weather, choose a t-shirt with a hood.

T-Shirt Fabrics

Plenty of people have some idea that there is a difference between natural cotton fabrics and synthetic, man-made fabrics – but even cotton comes in many varieties.

  • Cotton lawn is a very lightweight, partially see-through fabric, ideal for ladies’ summer blouses. It works best with loose, unstructured styles because it isn’t very durable.
  • To make brushed cotton, one or both sides of the fabric are rubbed gently with a fine-toothed metal brush. The process removes any lint from the fabric and leaves it very smooth and silky. It’s also warmer than regular cotton and is great for casual shirts.
  • Chambray is made from two different-coloured yarns, which gives the fabric the appearance of extra depth and texture. For example, when blue and white threads are used together, chambray will look very similar to denim, even though it’s so much softer and thinner.
  • Corduroy has raised ‘ribs’ that are parallel to one another and evenly spaced. It is a pile fabric, which means that it consists of loops of thread that have been cut, with the ends of the threads facing upward like the bristles of a brush (think of a pile carpet). Light- and medium-weight corduroys make excellent t-shirts.
  • Like brushed cotton, flannel is a soft, almost furry fabric (on one or both sides). The texture is created either through brushing or by weaving the threads of the fabric very loosely. It’s great for casual shirts, especially shirts for slightly chilly weather.

Final Thoughts

With all that choice, finding that perfect t-shirt might take longer than you expect, so don’t leave it till the last minute!
